Two local wineries, associated with CIA, with very different stories but united by passion for great wine, have obtained, in recent days, the second place Falstaff trophy, given by the prestigious German magazine specialized in the enology sector and recognized as an international reference point for exporters. The companies that won the “Piemonte Bianco Trophy 2021” were the Sassaia di Capriata d’Orba with the Derthona Platinum Timorasso and Villa Sparina in Monterotondo Gavi with the 2009 Villa Sparina 10 years Gavi di Gavi Docg. The applause of Cia Alessandria comes from Daniela Ferrando, a wine entrepreneur and provincial vice president of the organization: “the Alessandria area demonstrates an important growth of our producers, expressed in the recognition of quality wines. We are now considered the true province of whites ».

«We work in small quantities – says Enrico de Alessandrini of Sassaia – we have 16 hectares of vineyards. In addition to Derthona Timorasso we also produce the Monferrato Nebbiolo which obtained the DOC in 2019, Cabernet Sauvignon, SanGiovese, Pinot and Syrah. Let’s not forget, however, Dolcetto which is of the Ovada territory ». The real turning point, however, is represented by the Timorasso that, thanks to the tireless work of Walter Massa in saving it from extinction in the 1980’s, gave Sassaia excellent Falstaff results. Enrico de Alessandrini strongly believes in welcoming visitors and sharing knowledge of wine and the territory. “We have adopted the Californian model, – continues de Alessandrini- it is founded on developing a direct relationship with the consumer. In this regard, we have also created various tasting experiences which include the winery and in the vineyard.” The history of Villa Sparina has its roots in 1700 when it was a colonial complex, owned by Marquis Franzoni of Genoa, and is immersed in the Monferrato vineyards. Today the estate includes 100 hectares of property of which about 70 are planted with vineyards. “In 2018 – says Stefano Moccagatta who together with his brothers Massimo and Tiziana runs the winery and the annexed hotel and restaurant – we presented the new label “Villa Sparina 10 years”. A project that wants to highlight the ability of Gavi to improve during bottle aging.”
