Palmetto Bluff was the latter — because you didn’t just taste Timorasso; you understood it. When a group recognizes why Derthona is called the “White Barolo” — the structure, the tension, the mineral drive, the aging horizon — it tells us we’re speaking the same language.
That’s the community we’re building at Sassaia: collectors and explorers who value precision, provenance, and wines that evolve elegantly over time. As a small expression of gratitude — and because this audience deserves first access — we’re extending the same allocation we offered at Nantucket to the Society of the Cork.

Both the 2022 and 2023 Derthona Timorasso were awarded 95 points by James Suckling — back-to-back vintages, same historic score, same Burgundian signature. This is the wine you tasted at the Bluff.
When a dozen top estates arrive all at once, it signals something far more significant — a genuine rediscovery of a wine region. That is what is happening in the Colli Tortonesi, thanks to Derthona wines and the native white grape used in their making, Timorasso.
— JAMES SUCKLING · On the Colli Tortonesi region
Wine Enthusiast recommends drinking the 2023 through 2035. The 2022 through 2040. These are not conservative estimates — they are based on the wine’s chemistry: pH ~3.2, TA ~6.5 g/L, and a barrel regimen that builds structure for the long term.
Vibrant citrus and yellow-fleshed fruit. Pronounced minerality and saline notes. Linear profile with firm acidity and a first whisper of honey.
Honey, chamomile, and toasted hazelnuts emerge. Texture broadens and layers. The ideal window for complex gastronomic pairings.
Dried fruit, beeswax, savory mineral depth. The structure integrates revealing a resilient mineral backbone that stands alongside mature Grand Cru Burgundy.
The philosophy at Sassaia traces to Giulio de Alessandrini di Neuenstein — a 16th-century physician to emperors and counselor to the Council of Trent. His conviction: profound results come from respecting natural rhythms and achieving perfect balance.
Enrico de Alessandrini — Virginia-born, Italian-American, trained at UC Davis and in the cellars of Gevrey-Chambertin under fifth-generation winemaker Pierre Naigeon — is both guardian of this heritage and its most restless innovator. Ellen de Alessandrini is the passion behind the vineyards.
Sassaia was the first producer to dedicate its core Timorasso entirely to the Burgundy style — Chassin oak barriques from Burgundy’s Jupilles forest, the same cooperage used by the great crus of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault.
🏛️
de Alessandrini roots from 15th-century Trento. Property in Capriata d'Orba held since the early 1900s.
🎓
Professional Certificate · Apprenticeship with Pierre Naigeon, Gevrey-Chambertin.
🌿
Indigenous yeasts · Solar-powered cellar · Satellite-monitored harvest.
First producer to dedicate core Timorasso production to barrel fermentation in Chassin Burgundy oak.
🗺️
Profigate (Val Grue, 410m): chalk limestone. Cadaborgo (Val Curone, 425m): red marine clay.
Timorasso’s mineral backbone, natural acidity, and textured structure make it one of the most versatile white wines at the table.
🦞
Lobster, scallops, crab. Acidity cuts richness; minerality amplifies the sea.
🍝
Tagliatelle al tartufo, pici e cacio. Oak texture mirrors creamy sauces perfectly.
🐟
Halibut, turbot, cod beurre blanc. Length and salinity elevate delicate preparations.
🧀
Comté, Gruyère, Parmigiano. A mature vintage of Timorasso is transformative.
